San Francisco combines convent, military and funerary history. The church is only part of the visit: below its eastern end lies the Mendoza crypt, inspired by El Escorial’s pantheon. Their scales are very different. Check that both spaces are open; reaching the crypt involves several flights of stairs.

Plan this visit

Two scales for the same memory

The church and underground burial space offer very different settings. First observe the nave’s direction, then, if you descend, compare the crypt’s scale and funerary arrangement. Do not reduce both areas to one photographic stop: the relationship between surface and underground is part of the ensemble’s interest.

Assess the descent before admission

The municipal listing notes several flights of steps to the crypt and a raised threshold at the church entrance. Check the route you can manage before buying or booking. If you can visit only the upper area, ask what interpretation it offers and decide whether that meets your interests. Services may alter access; allow time for the journey to and from the complex.
