Alicante on a rainy day

MACA beside Santa María and MUBAG in Gravina Palace offer a choice between contemporary art and fine art. Check the day's exhibitions and opening before deciding. Pick one as your main visit and keep journeys between indoor stops short.

MARQ Archaeological Museum
Rodriguillo · Public domain

MARQ introduces the Alicante region through what people left behind. Its permanent galleries cover Prehistory, Iberian culture, the Roman world, the Middle Ages and modern and contemporary periods. This is more than a succession of ancient objects: archaeology connects things, places and questions about everyday life. The building adds another layer because it occupies the former Provincial Hospital of San Juan de Dios, designed by Juan Vidal Ramos. Once inside, choose an object that catches your attention and imagine how it was made, used and eventually preserved. Then compare materials and techniques across periods. That approach turns dates into human stories. Check current exhibitions and admission arrangements; visiting the museum does not automatically include archaeological sites associated with the institution, which require their own journey and access arrangements.

Two options near the old town

Give MARQ its own part of the day

The Provincial Archaeological Museum is on Plaza del Doctor Gómez Ulla, away from the museum cluster near the harbour. Allow travel time and check admission for the exhibition you want. Do not assume a temporary show has the same arrangements as the regular collection.

Swap the sea for an indoor visit

If weather affects sailings, contact your Tabarca operator before heading to the boarding point. Keep a museum as a backup. The castle has open-air areas and is not a fully sheltered alternative; check access notices there too.
