Your first hour in Madrid

You have arrived. Start slowly: a simple walk, a break and a plan you actually want to do.

Plaza Mayor, Madrid

Plaza Mayor occupies the site of an old market in Habsburg Madrid. Its arcades and façades form an enclosed urban space, unlike the surrounding streets. Find the Casa de la Panadería and its mythological paintings. The equestrian statue in the centre depicts Philip III. Walk along one side beneath the arches to appreciate the square’s proportions.

Puerta del Sol is one of Madrid’s main meeting places. Its name preserves the memory of an old gate, although today it is an open square. Look for the clock on the Casa de Correos, associated with New Year’s Eve, and the Kilometre Zero marker. Notice the streets meeting here before continuing towards Plaza Mayor.

Cibeles is a square, a fountain and a setting of public buildings. Completed in 1782, the fountain depicts the goddess on a chariot drawn by lions. Around it stand the Bank of Spain and the Buenavista, Linares and Cibeles palaces. The last was the post office headquarters and now houses City Hall and the CentroCentro cultural space.

Temple of Debod

The Temple of Debod is an Egyptian temple relocated to Madrid. Its presence is connected with international efforts to save monuments threatened by the Aswan dam. Compare its ancient stones with the surrounding urban landscape. Walking around the grounds and visiting the interior are different experiences; check access arrangements before planning to enter.
