MADRID YOUR WAY

A food stop along your route

Three food stops near the routes, with neighbourhood photographs and links to help you choose.

Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor occupies the site of an old market in Habsburg Madrid. Its arcades and façades form an enclosed urban space, unlike the surrounding streets. Find the Casa de la Panadería and its mythological paintings. The equestrian statue in the centre depicts Philip III. Walk along one side beneath the arches to appreciate the square’s proportions.

Mercado de San Miguel

Tapas and food stalls

Fits between Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa. Check prices per item: several small dishes can add up to more than a set meal.

Budget: varies by stall and order; check the menu.

Literary Quarter
Area photograph · Luis García (Zaqarbal) · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons

The Literary Quarter takes its name from Golden Age writers who lived here, including Cervantes, Lope de Vega and Quevedo. The walk matters as much as any individual building. Explore the streets between Santa Ana and Paseo del Prado at an unhurried pace. Literary memory, shops and restaurants make this a natural break between visits.

Gran Vía and Callao
Area photograph · Diriye Amey from Locarno, Switzerland · CC BY 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons

Gran Vía is one of Madrid’s great avenues and a sign of its transformation into a modern city. Alternate your attention between façades and junctions: theatres, shops and buildings of different heights shape the walk. Callao is a useful point for getting your bearings. You do not need to walk the entire avenue; choose a stretch and observe it.

Choosing without surprises

Check the menu and prices before ordering, ask what a set menu includes, and discuss allergens directly with the venue. These suggestions help you find areas to eat: we have not tried every stall and cannot guarantee availability. We have no commercial agreements with these markets.
