Choose what fits your visit

Three decisions to organise the day without turning it into a checklist of tickets. Routes and time allowances are editorial suggestions; adjust the order to your bookings and pace.

01

Two or three hours: Austrias or painting

For a short first visit, we suggest Sol → Plaza Mayor → Plaza de la Villa → Plaza de Oriente, viewing buildings outside. Compare the squares and reach the Palace area without a succession of admissions. If painting is your priority, replace that block with the Prado and a nearby break. Do not try to complete both options in the same time: choosing the museum means giving up part of the walk, and Prado admission uses a timed slot.

02

Saving on tickets: choose one free visit per afternoon

The Prado and Royal Palace publish free periods with different conditions. We do not suggest chaining them together: windows can overlap and the Palace’s last admission limits the margin. Choose by interest, check the Palace’s eligibility requirements and the Prado’s admission procedure, and use the rest for an outdoor walk. Saving money can mean less time inside and limited capacity; a detailed collection visit deserves its own block even if another slot is cheaper.

03

Prado and Retiro: retain an alternative to the park

After the museum, Retiro can be a pleasant break, but do not make it an indispensable second commitment. The council publishes a map of park restrictions and closures: check before setting off, particularly during weather warnings. If access is restricted, retain the Prado visit and move your break to a nearby indoor option. With children, avoid promising boats, playgrounds or gardens without checking that day’s conditions.

Outings and practical plans

Arriving and finding your bearings

Atocha and Chamartín are different stations: check your ticket before choosing accommodation or a connection. From Barajas compare metro, Airport Express bus and suburban rail for your terminal; trains serve T4, not every terminal. Walking and metro are usually more practical than driving around the historic centre.

Two routes to choose from

01

The centre and Habsburg Madrid

Estimated time: 3–4 hours, excluding long indoor visits

Start in Sol, cross Plaza Mayor and continue through Plaza de la Villa to the Almudena and Royal Palace. Finish in Plaza de Oriente, choosing between a palace visit and the gardens. This compact sequence suits a first morning; book the interior separately and avoid squeezing it between timed appointments.

02

Art and a Retiro break

Estimated time: Half a day; add 2–3 hours for the Prado

Begin at Cibeles, walk down Paseo del Prado and choose one museum as the main visit. Continue towards Puerta de Alcalá and enter Retiro for a walk to the lake. Put the Prado before your park break if visiting. The outdoor walk is free; museums, exhibitions and boats have separate arrangements.

Toledo

Choose Toledo for a hilly historic centre, cathedral and El Greco heritage. Allow a full day and choose two interiors rather than attempting every monument.

Train from Atocha; Toledo station is outside the old town, requiring a final walk, bus or taxi.

Segovia

Segovia

The Aqueduct, cathedral and Alcázar form an easy-to-plan monumental walk. Allow for the old-town climb and lunch; high-speed trains do not arrive beside the Aqueduct.

Train from Chamartín to Segovia-Guiomar followed by local transport; intercity bus is an alternative.

Alcalá de Henares

An easy outing around Calle Mayor, Plaza de Cervantes and the university area. It suits an early-afternoon return better than a long-distance excursion.

Suburban train to Alcalá de Henares and walk into town; do not confuse it with Alcalá Universidad station.

With children

For a first family visit, combine Sol and Plaza Mayor in the morning with Retiro in the afternoon and a proper break between them. Avoid full Royal Palace and Prado visits on the same day. Choose outdoor play or a short interior according to age and energy.

In the rain

In rain, build the day around one museum rather than three consecutive admissions. The Prado for historic painting, Reina Sofía for modern art or Archaeological Museum for history offer different experiences. Eat nearby and use metro to shorten exposed transfers; save Retiro for a dry spell.

What to try and where to pause

Choose cocido for a leisurely meal, a calamari sandwich for an informal stop and tapas in areas such as La Latina. Check menu and portion prices before sitting down; a tourist market differs from a set lunch menu.
