Behind the cathedral, Calle San Vicente provides a quieter pause. The Archaeological Museum occupies the former Benedictine monastery of San Vicente and changes the scale of the story, from one square to the whole Asturian territory. Its displays explore prehistory, the Iron Age, the Roman period and the medieval world. First observe the building and its relationship with the surrounding religious ensemble: the setting belongs to the story too. Inside, choose a period and explore it slowly. This is useful preparation for the pre-Romanesque monuments and a rewarding option on a rainy day. Check current visiting arrangements before entering.

Plan this visit
From find to interpretation
The museum presents spaces that explain the evolution of its own building alongside archaeological objects. Alternate those two readings: choose an object, then consider the setting in which it is displayed. What information comes from the find itself, and what does the exhibition add? Keeping that distinction helps avoid treating a reconstruction as though everything remained precisely where it was discovered.
A connection with Naranco
If you plan to visit Naranco, use the museum to prepare questions about architectural fragments and context. You need not cover every period first: select one theme and return to the floor plan when your interests change. The website offers a virtual visit to other spaces, useful for orientation without implying physical access to research areas.
