La Concha stretches from the City Hall to Pico del Loro and forms one of San Sebastián's most recognisable images. Here the city appears as a sequence of beach, promenade and buildings facing the water. Follow the curve of the bay with your eyes and compare its two ends. Part of the place's appeal lies in this relationship between landscape and everyday urban life.

Choose what fits your visit
Three decisions to organise the day without turning it into a checklist of tickets. Routes and time allowances are editorial suggestions; adjust the order to your bookings and pace.
01
Old Town and bay before the full La Concha walk
For a short first visit, choose the Old Town, harbour and part of La Concha promenade. Constitución Square draws you into the streets before the view opens towards the water. Continuing to Miramar and Ondarreta changes your endpoint and return; do so if the coastal walk is your priority. You need not cover the whole bay to leave room for food or a museum.

02
Urgull or Igeldo: two hills, two decisions
Urgull extends the visit from the Old Town area, while Igeldo stands at the opposite end of the bay and requires a different approach. Choose one if you also want beach time or a museum. Both offer elevation, but they are neither interchangeable nor neighbouring viewpoints. Decide between walking the historic city’s hill and an outing towards Ondarreta’s far end, always including the return.

03
Peine del Viento: sea conditions determine access
If you want Chillida’s sculptures, make Peine del Viento a chosen destination in the Ondarreta area rather than a quick photograph after the harbour. The tourism office warns that police may close access in rough seas. Accept that limit and keep your walk to authorised areas. Do not build the day around approaching waves or assuming the sculpture square will always be available.

Combine La Concha Bay, the Old Town and a walk in Gros without trying to cover the entire coastline at once. Balance pintxos with a seated meal and keep the Aquarium or San Telmo for rain. Trips to other towns need separate transport.

Start / resume a walk

Rafael Moneo designed the Kursaal, completed in 1999. Its large volumes create a contemporary presence beside the mouth of the Urumea. Observe them from different points along the promenade: they change the relationship between city, sky and sea. The building shows that San Sebastián's architectural identity includes both its elegant past and deliberately new interventions in the urban landscape.

The Aquarium opened in 1928 beside the harbour, bringing together marine education and training associated with fishing. Its position on the rocks reinforces the relationship between building and sea. Before entering, notice the supports, openings and viewpoints. The stop recalls that understanding the ocean also belongs to San Sebastián's history, alongside its beaches, boats and working harbour activities around the bay.

Outings and practical plans
Arriving and finding your bearings
Distinguish the Adif station beside the Urumea from Amara, used by Euskotren. The bus station is beside the Adif rail area. Check your airport transfer; the airport is outside central Donostia. The bay promenade is easy, but Urgull and Igeldo climbs need separate planning.
Two routes to choose from
Old Town and La Concha
Estimated time: 3–4 hours without climbing Urgull
Start at Boulevard, enter the Old Town via Plaza de la Constitución, then continue to Santa María and the harbour. Follow La Concha to Miramar gardens. This links city and scenery without a mountain climb. For Urgull add a separate block before the harbour and shorten the beach stretch; the full bay is longer than it looks.
Urumea and Gros
Estimated time: 2–3 hours with a break
From María Cristina bridge follow the Urumea towards Victoria Eugenia Theatre and cross to Gros beside Kursaal. Finish along Zurriola promenade for surf atmosphere, remembering this is not a calm swimming pool. It makes a good second route after the Old Town. In rough seas stay in authorised areas and do not approach waves for photographs.
Nearby outings

Hondarribia
Combine the upper walled town and waterside Marina district. They have different atmospheres; allow both rather than spending the whole outing on one restaurant street.
Intercity bus from Donostia; choose the stop according to your first district.

Pasaia
The harbour and Pasai Donibane streets offer a nearby maritime escape. Link the banks by local boat when running and consider Albaola as a separately scheduled cultural visit.
Bus to your chosen area; the boat crossing is an additional connection, not automatically included.

Getaria
Small old town, fishing harbour and coastal scenery suit an unhurried day. The Balenciaga Museum adds fashion and design if interested; it is optional for enjoying the walk and food.
Lurraldebus from Donostia along the coast; check service and return for your date.
View on map ↗With children
La Concha and gardens alternate walking and play; Aquarium can be the main indoor visit. For Igeldo check transport and attraction operation separately. Beaches are not equally calm: respect flags and adapt swimming and walking to sea conditions.
In the rain
San Telmo explores Basque history and culture; Aquarium combines maritime heritage and tanks. Choose one as the day’s focus and eat nearby. The Old Town can be explored in short intervals but is not covered; avoid relying on long coastal walks during storms.
What to try and where to pause
Choose two or three pintxo bars by speciality rather than an endless list. Ask which dishes are cooked to order and check unit prices. Give grilled fish or a tasting menu a separate time and budget allocation.
