The Guggenheim occupies a bend in the estuary formerly used by the port and industry. Its construction between 1993 and 1997 reveals a change in the waterfront’s use, although it does not explain Bilbao’s entire transformation on its own. Frank Gehry combined titanium, glass and limestone: compare opaque surfaces, reflections and transparency before taking a photograph. The titanium changes tone with the atmosphere, making different viewpoints along the promenade rewarding. The curves required digital design tools such as CATIA. Exploring the exterior is a visit in its own right; allow extra time for the galleries and check current exhibitions and admission arrangements with the museum.

Guggenheim: admission or guided visit
Walking beside the building is different from entering the exhibitions. Compare independent admission, audio guides and guided visits, checking what each includes. Language and meeting point matter as much as price.

Choose for the exhibition, not just the photo
Check the museum programme before choosing your day. Works are not always on display and galleries may change exhibitions. Check combined-ticket conditions too if you also want to visit Bilbao Museoa.
Leave room in the day
Allow time for any required bag storage and to explore at your own pace. Afterwards, continue along Abandoibarra or into Doña Casilda Park. Our outdoor riverside walk does not require booking a tour.
