San Pedro and Lovers’ Mausoleum

At San Pedro, distinguish three experiences: the church’s architecture, the traditional Lovers’ story and Juan de Ávalos’s funerary sculptures. Isabel and Diego’s tale belongs to Teruel’s identity, but its legendary transmission does not establish every episode as historical fact. In front of the reclining figures, notice the hands approaching without touching: this gesture gives visual form to the separation at the heart of the narrative. Then turn your attention to the building and compare its decoration with the towers you have already seen. The visit becomes more than simply learning the ending of a story. Check the complex’s admission options to establish whether church, cloister or other spaces are included, and allow an unhurried slot. Sculpture, tradition and architecture become richer when you recognise what each contributes.
