Cristo del Otero changes the scale of your visit, replacing central streets with a hill and broad views. Victorio Macho designed this monumental figure, inaugurated in 1931, with a restrained visual language. Turn towards the city to understand its position within the surrounding landscape. Plan the climb and return according to mobility and weather; the interpretation centre operates its own opening calendar.

Sculpture and landscape

The municipal source connects the monument with Victorio Macho and the views from the hill. Separate those two experiences: first consider the figure’s proportions, verticality and gesture, then read the landscape as a relationship between city and surrounding territory. Changing your attention prevents the outing becoming only a distant photograph. The work does not need a place in a height ranking to be worth appreciating.

An outing of its own

Decide whether your main interest is the exterior monument or also the Interpretation Centre. Check the latter’s visiting conditions separately. Arrange your outward and return journeys and allow time for both interests if you choose them. The hill should not be added to an exhausting route as though it were another old-town corner.
