The cathedral’s history begins below ground. Its crypt combines two spaces, one from the seventh century and another enlarged in the eleventh; the great Gothic church rose above them after its foundation stone was laid in 1321. These overlapping layers explain the visit better than a list of architectural styles. Walk around the building first, comparing the horizontal sweep of its walls with the height you experience inside. Then choose a viewpoint from which to follow pillars and vaults. If you visit the crypt, reconsider that contrast in scale: the intimate underground space and the great church describe different moments within one continuing history, with neither replacing the other.

Plan this visit

A visit through contrasts

The cathedral presents a complex shaped by different periods. To avoid becoming lost in names, choose two contrasts: broad space versus an intimate setting, and architecture versus an artwork placed within it. Notice how your viewing distance changes in each case. This approach does not require covering everything or assigning a style to every stone; it helps you remember specific relationships afterwards.

Choose guidance or independence

The cathedral website distinguishes individual and guided visits and offers app-based material. Decide what support you need: an accompanied explanation or your own selection with reference material. The homepage retains information dated 2022 alongside other details; confirm the current format and conditions directly rather than planning around an old price.
