Calle San Francisco leads to a central part of Oviedo's identity: its university. The institution began teaching in 1608 and for more than three centuries its activities centred on this historic building. After the cathedral, consider another way of transforming a city: studying, teaching and sharing knowledge. Notice the restrained exterior and its relationship with the surrounding streets. The ensemble has experienced changes and destructive events, so its history also concerns rebuilding and continuity. If an entrance is open, confirm which areas visitors may access: this remains an institutional setting. Continue afterwards towards La Escandalera and Campo San Francisco.

Plan this visit

A building still at work

The Central Library occupies the upper cloister of the historic building. That detail suggests a different reading of the façade: this is a place of study as well as a monument. If authorised access lets you see the courtyard, compare the separation between circulation and work. An open door or a library timetable should not be treated as an invitation to wander through every room.

University or collection

Fit this stop between the old town and your urban walk if the relationship between city and learning interests you. For artworks or archaeological objects arranged as an exhibition, choose the relevant museums. For a university event, exhibition or tour, check its specific announcement; ordinary academic activity does not constitute a permanent tourist programme.
