This gate connects the cathedral area with the outside of the walls. Approach from both sides and compare walking through the structure with walking above it. The wall is no isolated backdrop: it still shapes routes and everyday life. Use an authorised entrance to the wall walk and check conditions first; passing through the gate does not itself provide step-free access.

Plan this visit

Compare the lower passage and upper walk

The official guide relates this gate to access to the cathedral chapter’s former gardens. We suggest passing through and then looking back towards the cathedral: this reveals an everyday connection as well as a defensive opening. Crossing the wall and walking above it offer different ways to understand it.

A ramp does not mean a uniform route

The leaflet identifies a nearby ramp towards the Canons’ Walk. If you need it, check its condition and your intended section; an entrance ramp does not guarantee a full circuit without slopes or uneven surfaces. Decide your exit before ascending and retain the exterior passage as an alternative.
