Opposite the cathedral, the former hospital introduces care and civic architecture into your walk. Its courtyard and staircase focus attention on stone, proportions and movement. Today it houses the Institut d'Estudis Ilerdencs, connecting the old building with contemporary cultural life. Check exhibitions and open rooms before entering; access to the courtyard does not necessarily include every gallery or institutional space inside.
Sources checked on 18 October 2026. Opening and access may change. The walk does not include admission; allow extra time for interiors. Routes have not been audited for accessibility.
Plan this visit
Follow the stair as a route
The municipal account highlights the stone staircase connecting courtyard and gallery. We suggest examining circulation and light before decorative details. Thinking of a building for care rather than a palace changes the questions asked about its spaces and its relationship with the city and people who used it.
Heritage and exhibition are different
IEI rooms have a temporary programme. Decide between architecture and a particular show, checking dates before visiting. Courtyard entry does not mean that all rooms are open. You can combine observation with the Catedral Nova opposite without making indoor admission to every building an obligatory part of your walking itinerary. Follow the available exhibition route rather than closed doors.
