Las Canteras replaces the historic centre with a city open to the Atlantic. La Barra, the natural reef running alongside much of the beach, shapes the landscape and marine habitats; it is neither an artificial swimming pool nor a permanent guarantee of safety. Notice how the tide changes the view and how promenade, sand and marine life coexist. This area is separate from Vegueta and Triana: arrange a bus journey and your own return. Walking the entire beach is not necessary to enjoy it. Choose a stretch according to time and energy, respecting signs, species and protected spaces. If swimming, follow current safety instructions. The perspective changes again towards La Cícer and the Auditorium, where sea conditions may differ from other sections.

Plan this visit
Choose your beach landscape
Las Canteras brings together sections with different identities, from La Puntilla and Playa Grande to La Cícer and the Auditorium. For a first visit, choose a stretch with recognisable starting and finishing points: Playa Grande towards Peña La Vieja focuses on the coastal landscape; La Cícer towards the Auditorium connects the surfing setting with architecture. You need not cover the full length to understand the beach.
Read the coast from the promenade
La Barra is a sandstone formation associated with an earlier shoreline. Observe it from land and compare its direction with the beach, rather than treating it as a path you must follow. A simple exercise is to repeat a photograph from two promenade locations and identify the persistent elements: rock, horizon and urban frontage.
