Casa de Colón invites you to consider the Canary Islands within Atlantic history. Its collections and library concern America and links between the two shores, while the building reveals how a museum's image is constructed too. One telling detail lies in the entrances: the Calle Colón doorway preserves a sixteenth-century Gothic façade, while other entrances were designed for the museum's inauguration. Not everything that looks old therefore belongs to the same moment. Observe courtyards, stone and proportions before exploring the rooms. The name should not suggest a house preserved exactly as Columbus inhabited it. Consult the museum's interpretation and visiting arrangements, allowing time to understand connections, objects and historical context rather than simply collecting photographs.

Plan this visit

Follow a question through the galleries

Maps, city models and a recreated cabin approach the Atlantic story at different scales. Choose a question, such as how a journey is represented, and compare a map with the reconstruction: one organises distances while the other helps you imagine a confined space. The cabin is an interpretive reconstruction, rather than an original vessel preserved inside the museum.

Read the building as well

The courtyards allow you to alternate objects and architecture. The Gothic doorway on Calle Colón is original, whereas other portals were made for the museum installation; this distinction prevents reading the whole complex as an unchanged house from a single period. If also visiting El Museo Canario, focus here on navigation and the city to make the two visits complementary.
