MUBA offers a view of Extremadura through those who painted, sculpted or reinterpreted it. Its origins connect with provincial support for artists from the nineteenth century: scholarships, works sent back by recipients and donations helped build a public collection. The museum began in 1919 and opened its first galleries in January 1920. Its route includes Luis de Morales, Zurbarán, Eugenio Hermoso, Adelardo Covarsí and Juan Barjola, without reducing the region to one artistic style. Compare landscape, portraiture and scenes of everyday customs to discover how each period’s viewpoint changes. The collection occupies several connected buildings. Check which galleries are currently open, particularly given announced rehabilitation works, rather than assuming that every space in the complex is available during your visit.

Plan this visit

Choose a comparison

The museum’s accounts link Covarsí with hunting scenes and landscape, and Hermoso with people and popular customs. If works by both are displayed, compare how figures sit within their surroundings. This is an observation thread, not a guarantee of which paintings are on show that day.

Find your bearings before exploring

The official plan separates buildings for collections and temporary exhibitions around a courtyard. Choose a theme or sector first, especially when time is limited. You do not need to visit every room to make a collection visit meaningful.

Confirm available spaces

The provincial authority announced rehabilitation of the complex. Ask which galleries are open before organising a complete visit; that announcement does not establish total closure. Check exhibition dates too: an older page or catalogue does not show that a temporary display is still running.
