The Provincial Archaeological Museum introduces a story longer than that of Badajoz itself. Its home, the fortified palace of the Counts of Roca within the Alcazaba, is already part of the experience before you reach the displays. Collections range from prehistory to the medieval world, explaining communities and territories across the province. Bronze Age stelae are among the notable groups: carved stones whose figures and objects invite questions about what those societies intended to represent. Compare their visual communication with Roman, Visigothic and Islamic material along the route. The museum does not replace visits to the sites where objects originated; it brings evidence together to interpret them. Admission and opening times are independent of a walk around the Alcazaba enclosure.

Plan this visit

Compare images and inscriptions

The official tourism portal highlights Bronze Age stelae and Islamic funerary inscriptions. We suggest choosing an example from each group, if displayed, and comparing communication through figures or writing. Do not assume that every intention of their makers is known with certainty.

Follow the objects’ origins

Look for the excavation site on the labels and connect each object to the province. Two pieces from different periods may reveal more than attempting the entire chronology. Ask what information survives in the object itself and what depends on its archaeological context.

Combine museum and enclosure

The museum occupies the Palace of the Counts of Roca within the Alcazaba. Use that proximity, but allow a dedicated block for the galleries. Confirm current arrangements with the museum: access to the outer enclosure does not determine museum opening or which displays are available.
