The Aqueduct was not created as urban decoration: it brought water into Segovia. Its large granite blocks were laid without mortar, relying on careful cutting and balanced forces. From Azoguejo square, follow the double row of arches, then imagine the water channel continuing beyond the visible structure. The monumental section is only part of an extensive work of Roman engineering.

Choose what fits your visit
Three decisions to organise the day without turning it into a checklist of tickets. Routes and time allowances are editorial suggestions; adjust the order to your bookings and pace.
01
One morning: the monumental axis and return to Guiomar
We suggest Azoguejo and the Aqueduct → Calle Real and San Martín → Plaza Mayor → Alcázar, choosing one interior. This follows the old town rather than returning to the Aqueduct between visits. If arriving by train at Segovia-Guiomar, allow for the connection to and from the centre: the station is not beside the monument. Fix your return first and drop a visit rather than risk the train. Leave Eresma and La Granja out of this short morning.

02
Alcázar: decide whether you want the tower climb
A Palace and Museum visit is different from admission to the Tower of Juan II. The tower involves 152 spiral steps and is not accessible for reduced mobility. To avoid that staircase, choose the Palace and Museum option and check its ramp arrangements against your needs. If the tower is your priority, confirm availability before arranging the walk. Do not assume every ticket includes it, or rule out the whole Alcázar because you do not want the climb.

03
Eresma valley: a second route rather than a small detour
The valley offers views of the Alcázar skyline and the surroundings of the Royal Mint and San Marcos. It is a separate block from the upper Aqueduct–Plaza Mayor–Alcázar axis. If admission is due soon or you need to return to Guiomar, keep the upper walk and save the valley for another period. If you choose to descend, check the full route and return first; reaching the Royal Mint does not put you beside the Aqueduct.

Start / resume a walk

These streets preserve the memory of Segovia's Jewish community, expelled in 1492. A walk can connect the former main synagogue, Judería Vieja and San Andrés Gate. In Abraham Seneor's former house, the visitor centre explains everyday life and Sephardic traditions. Take your time: this neighbourhood is best understood through the connections between its streets and buildings rather than as a single isolated monument.

Philip II founded this mint in 1583, with designs by Juan de Herrera. Its innovation was to harness the Eresma's water to drive coin-making machinery: the river supplied industrial power. Before entering, notice the relationship between the buildings and the watercourse. This site tells a different story from the palaces and churches, focusing instead on technology, production and money.

Antonio Machado lived in this former boarding house between 1919 and 1931, during his years teaching in Segovia. Unlike the grand monuments, the visit offers a domestic scale: rooms, furniture and objects bring the poet closer to everyday life. Before continuing, consider the city as somewhere lived in and written about, rather than merely photographed. The house adds a literary pause to the walk.

Plan your visit
Outings and practical plans
Arriving and finding your bearings
Segovia-Guiomar is outside town: allow a local bus or taxi to the Aqueduct. The bus station is closer to the centre. The monumental route climbs from Azoguejo to Plaza Mayor then continues to the Alcázar; leave luggage before starting.
Two routes to choose from
Aqueduct to Alcázar
Estimated time: 4–5 hours with one interior
Begin beneath the Aqueduct at Azoguejo, climb Calle Real via San Martín to Plaza Mayor, then continue from the cathedral to the Alcázar. Allow additional time for a booked interior. This is the natural first-visit axis, with the climb at the start. Do not book an early lunch if stopping at every viewpoint.
Jewish quarter and Eresma valley
Estimated time: 3–4 hours, including descent and return
From Plaza Mayor explore the Jewish quarter and continue to San Andrés gate for the walls. Then choose a descent towards the Eresma valley and Royal Mint or remain on the upper route to avoid elevation changes. The river gives a different perspective. Plan the return: finishing below is not the same as being beside the Aqueduct.
Nearby outings
La Granja de San Ildefonso
Palace and gardens fill a generous half-day or leisurely day. Visiting the gardens is different from seeing fountains operate: displays have separate schedules and can be cancelled.
Bus from Segovia or car; check return travel and that day’s access with Patrimonio Nacional.
View on map ↗Riofrío
A palace in woodland for another side of the Royal Sites. Check which rooms are available; wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed because animals do not follow visiting hours.
Car or arranged transfer; do not assume a frequent direct connection from the centre.
View on map ↗Madrid
From a multi-day Segovia stay, dedicate one day to Madrid. Choose one neighbourhood and museum or the historic centre rather than spending the day travelling between every landmark.
Train from Guiomar to Chamartín; add transfers to and from Segovia’s old town.
View on map ↗With children
Make the Aqueduct and Alcázar the day’s two highlights with food and play between them. With young children omit a tower or long visit rather than rushing everything. The Alcázar tower and valley descents are not equivalent to a stroller-friendly stroll.
In the rain
In rain choose the cathedral or Alcázar as the main visit and eat in the old town. The Royal Mint is another option if you plan the valley transfer. Wet granite and cobbles need grippy shoes; avoid a long circuit of outdoor viewpoints.
What to try and where to pause
Roast suckling pig and judiones are substantial: share portions if walking afterwards. Ponche segoviano suits a shorter sweet break. Book weekend tables at specific roast restaurants and ask about portions and sides.
