Construction of the great Romanesque cathedral began around 1075, when pilgrimage had become enormously important. The building you see brings together later transformations around that medieval core. Do not reduce it to a single period: compare façades, volumes and routes. Its history is a continuity of worship, arriving travellers and architectural adaptation around Saint James's tomb, shaping both the monument and the city.

Choose what fits your visit
Three decisions to organise the day without turning it into a checklist of tickets. Routes and time allowances are editorial suggestions; adjust the order to your bookings and pace.
01
Circle the cathedral before choosing an interior
For a short visit, view the cathedral from Obradoiro, Praterías, Quintana and Azabachería before choosing cultural admission. Each square changes your reading of the building and its place in the city. Then select museum or Portico according to your interest without assuming worship access includes them. Leave a break in the old-town streets: discovering Santiago does not require every special cathedral space.

02
Bonaval or Alameda: do not race between parks
After the old town, choose Bonaval for a cultural and landscaped setting, or Alameda to finish with the cathedral skyline. They are not the same edge of the historic city. To include both, arrange two sessions linked through the centre rather than expecting one linear route without backtracking. In rain, select a confirmed indoor visit and keep the park optional instead of making it compulsory.

03
Portico and Botafumeiro: separate your expectations
If the Pórtico de la Gloria is your goal, consult its specific visiting system and confirm admission before travelling. Entering the nave does not guarantee that view. The Botafumeiro belongs to the liturgy, and cultural admission does not establish its operation; the cathedral may publish restoration suspensions. Organise the day around a confirmed visit without promising a ceremony or the swinging censer.

Start / resume a walk
Obradoiro brings together different sides of Compostela: the cathedral, municipal authority at Raxoi Palace and the experience of people arriving from the Camino. Before taking photographs, turn slowly and compare the façades. The square acts as an urban stage where architectural styles, institutions and travellers coexist, each contributing a different story to this place of arrival.

Tradition connects the foundation of San Francisco with the saint's visit in 1214. The present church was built in the eighteenth century, followed by Neoclassical changes to its façade. Distinguish the documented building history from stories surrounding its origins. Notice the calm composition and the monument in the forecourt before continuing into the nearby streets of Compostela.

Bonaval Park occupies grounds and a former cemetery belonging to the Dominican convent. Its rehabilitation turned these historic layers into an urban landscape for walking. Notice the terraces, traces of walls and views across the rooftops. This is not a garden that conceals the past: the memory of the place shapes the way you move through it.

Outings and practical plans
Arriving and finding your bearings
The intermodal station joins rail and bus but sits a hilly walk from the old town. From the airport choose a centre or intermodal bus stop for your accommodation. Avoid improvising over cobbled streets with luggage; enjoy the centre after dropping bags.
Two routes to choose from
The cathedral squares
Estimated time: 3 hours; museum and special visits extra
Begin in Obradoiro, circle the cathedral via Praterías and Quintana and finish in Azabachería to understand its different facades. Distinguish worship access, museum and special tours: tickets and hours can differ. Continue through the old streets for lunch, respecting services and pilgrims. Botafumeiro operation is not guaranteed at every mass.
Abastos, Bonaval and Alameda
Estimated time: 4 hours with a break; two areas
Start at Abastos market during trading hours, then continue to Bonaval for the park and a nearby cultural visit. Return to the centre for lunch and finish in Alameda with cathedral views. These are two blocks separated by a break, not a linear route without backtracking. Adapt parks to weather and do not fit every museum into one morning.
Nearby outings

Padrón
A nearby outing linked to Jacobean tradition and Rosalía de Castro. Combine the town and botanical garden with a cultural visit rather than only stopping for peppers.
Train or bus by timetable; distinguish Padrón from Padrón-Barbanza before purchasing.

A Coruña
An Atlantic city combining old town, seafront and Tower of Hercules. The tower is not next to the railway station; choose two areas to avoid an excessively long walk.
Train from Santiago and local transport in A Coruña; leave a return buffer.

Fisterra
Harbour and cape offer an Atlantic day different from Compostela. Separate the town and lighthouse, and do not promise a sunset: cloud, wind and return travel shape the visit.
Car, excursion or a longer bus journey; plan the final cape approach and return.
View on map ↗With children
Turn the cathedral squares into a detail-spotting walk, with Alameda for play and views. Limit interiors and long waits with young children. Cobbles and slopes require stroller planning; one enjoyable short day beats repeatedly crossing the entire old town.
In the rain
The Museum of the Galician People or cathedral museum can anchor a rainy day according to interests. Keep lunch and visits in the same area. Arcades offer partial shelter, not a continuous covered route. Wet stone can be slippery even on apparently level streets.
What to try and where to pause
Empanada, broth, octopus and Santiago cake offer full meals or shorter breaks. At Abastos distinguish produce stalls from restaurants and their hours. Padrón peppers are not all hot; check ingredients when sharing with allergy sufferers.
