The Alcazaba uses terrain and gateways as part of its defence. At the Bóveda Vaída gateway, the passage forces a turn and hides the exit from direct view: this bend made entry more difficult. Look for changing axes and views between gateways and courtyards. In this way you can understand the building through movement, not only by admiring its walls from outside.

Two monuments, two entrances

Decide whether to visit the Alcazaba, Gibralfaro or both. Check ticket options and conditions in the municipal information. A combined ticket does not imply transport between the two sites.

Independent or guided

An independent visit lets you set the pace. A guided visit adds explanations, but check its language, meeting point and included tickets. The Roman Theatre area and exteriors can be part of your walk without booking the activity.

Plan for the climb

Expect slopes and uneven surfaces. Check accessibility, wear comfortable shoes and avoid the hottest part of the day. If visiting both monuments, allow for transfers, breaks and your return.
