The square links the old city with the expansion district. Use it to reset your itinerary and rest before studying façades. Walk around planted areas using crossings rather than stepping into traffic for photographs. Combine the park with a short architecture walk from here.

Plan this visit

A historic square that keeps changing

The refurbishment inaugurated on 13 October 2026 renewed paving, pedestrian axes, planting and the fountain. This invites you to read the square as a lived space rather than an image frozen at its original inauguration. Compare the direction of the paths with the surrounding façades and look at how the approach to each edge is organised.

Choose the next part of your day

Use the square to choose between three continuations: the citadel, the park or the Ensanche’s architecture. Coming from Melilla la Vieja, a pause in Hernández changes the scale of the walk before another building. For an architectural thread, examine the Assembly Palace and continue towards Reconquista, comparing institutional and commercial representation. Each branch then offers a theme of its own.
