Central Market and temporary market

The Central Market opened on 21 December 1949 beside Castellón’s monumental heart. Its history links trading in the old squares with a city supplied by market gardens and the Mediterranean. Rather than seeking one extraordinary product, consider that combination: seasonal vegetables, fish and family businesses explain everyday cooking in La Plana. Before planning food shopping, confirm the current location of the stalls and access arrangements with the market or council. Building work can move trading to temporary premises: do not assume the stalls remain inside the historic building.

Plan this visit

Shopping and viewing the building are different goals

The council announced the provisional market’s opening in Santa Clara square on 12 February 2026. Its September update still places traders there during renovation of the historic building. For shopping, find the operating location; for architecture, distinguish that stop from the place where goods are sold.

Do not turn a forecast into a reopening

The municipal announcement forecasts a move back in the first quarter of 2027. This is not an opening guarantee. Check recent information before visiting, and do not plan a meal assuming that the future roof terrace or other spaces announced in the project already operate.
