Plaza de San Juan de Dios acts as a reception room for the old town. Before entering the streets of El Pópulo, pause opposite the Town Hall and observe how façades and terraces organise this open space. The statue of Moret provides another landmark within the ensemble. From here, imagine a city connected to its harbour and the movement of people, even though today's walk invites a slower pace. Notice the transition between the broad square and the neighbouring streets: a few steps change the feeling of Cádiz. There is no need to enter a building to enjoy this first stop and find your bearings.

Plan this visit
Two façades to find your bearings
Locate the Town Hall and the church sharing the square’s name: recognising their outlines helps when you return from the centre’s streets. Try viewing the ensemble from one side and then along the Town Hall’s axis. Our suggestion is to compare how each position organises the square, rather than making the stop a single frontal photograph.
Choose the next stretch
Before continuing, choose between heading into El Pópulo or enjoying the open space near the harbour. The first option links streets and the theatre; the second provides a pause without adding another interior. The Town Hall advertises arranged group visits: seeing its façade does not mean an unrestricted visit inside is available.
