Altozano works as a meeting place and orientation point, but another historical layer lies beneath its everyday activity. The tourist office provides information about the square's transformation, while the air-raid shelter below recalls the Spanish Civil War. That relationship between surface and underground encourages a less obvious reading of urban space: a square preserves difficult memories as well as façades and terraces. Visiting the shelter requires checking current access arrangements; it is not automatically included in an exterior walk. Pause without blocking entrances and notice how streets converge here. The Municipal Museum in the former Town Hall adds a nearby cultural perspective. Use this stop to adjust your route according to museum opening, available time and remaining energy.
Sources checked on 17 October 2026. Opening and access may change. The walk does not include admission; allow extra time for interiors. Routes have not been audited for accessibility.
Plan this visit
Decide whether to include the underground visit
Municipal information describes the shelter as a guided group visit requiring an appointment. Make that decision before arrival rather than assuming entry is available after walking around the square. Contact the tourist office to confirm the session and current arrangements.
Connect the square with another memory
If you book the shelter, compare movement through its galleries and corridors with the open space above: this is our suggestion for relating protection to urban life. If you skip the underground visit, use Altozano to organise the next stops without treating the exterior walk as incomplete. The Municipal Museum and Museum of Albacete are different destinations.
