Three decisions to organise the day without turning it into a checklist of tickets. Routes and time allowances are editorial suggestions; adjust the order to your bookings and pace.
01
Market first if you want the stalls operating
Mercado Central publishes morning trading Monday to Saturday and closure on Sundays and public holidays. For produce and shopping, we suggest starting there, continuing to La Lonja, then the Cathedral squares. On Sunday, switch to exterior architecture and another confirmed interior. The collectors’ market held nearby is not the food stalls inside the building, so its presence does not establish that those traders are open.
Oceanogràfic or an architecture walk: different visits
Walking between the City of Arts buildings is different from visiting Oceanogràfic. The aquarium sells admission for a selected day and publishes its own calendar, with additional activities under separate conditions. We suggest making it the main block if aquariums interest you, reducing the later old-town or beach plan. For an exterior architecture afternoon, keep the walk and avoid buying multiple venues you do not intend to explore.
Albufera: choose a landscape beyond the Turia walk
L’Albufera and El Palmar offer lagoon, rice fields and food beyond the Turia’s urban circuit. We suggest a separate outing, choosing a walk, meal or boat trip as the main activity. For sunset on the water, confirm departure and return before fixing the rest of the day. Reaching the park does not guarantee a boat place, and a restaurant reservation does not arrange transport back to your accommodation.
Follow the stops in order or shorten the route. Use each map to calculate your journey from your current location; walking times have not been field-tested.
Opened in 1917, the station shows how a transport building can also be a work of Modernista art. Look for plant decoration and ceramics. If entering the hall, remember that this remains a working railway station.
This square helps you get your bearings before entering the historic centre’s streets. Notice how façades frame the open space and choose a landmark to recognise on your return. From here, the walk continues towards the Central Market.
The Central Market combines Modernista architecture with everyday food trading. Look first at the structure and light, then at produce from the surrounding farmland and Mediterranean. This is a working market: keep stalls accessible and ask before photographing people.
Explore the surroundings of the market and the Silk Exchange. Walking outside does not require a ticket; check market opening hours and entry conditions for the Silk Exchange.
Plaza de la Virgen brings together religious landmarks of the historic centre, including the Cathedral and Basilica of the Desamparados. Compare the open square with the surrounding streets. Seeing the ensemble outside is different from visiting each building inside.
The Serranos Towers recall a walled city where entering meant passing through a controlled gateway. Observe the two towers and central entrance. Going up is a separate visit and may be restricted by weather conditions.
Finish by the towers and the former riverbed. You can head into the garden for a break; climbing the towers is a separate visit with its own conditions.
Choose a section of the Turia Gardens and continue towards the City of Arts and Sciences. There is no need to walk the entire garden at once. Exploring the outdoor spaces and entering the Oceanogràfic, science museum or Hemisfèric are different plans; check individual and combined tickets before buying.
Plan a manageable day
Children and changing weather
With children, combine a short walk with one main visit. In hot weather, allow for breaks instead of making the entire Turia Gardens a compulsory walk.
Getting around
Check maps and tickets with Metrovalencia. Confirm zones, airport coverage and service notices for your travel date.
Compare the language, included admission, meeting point and cancellation conditions before booking. Check current prices and availability on Civitatis. Free tours generally work on voluntary tips to the guide.
Affiliate link: we may earn a commission if you book. The free walking route does not require a purchase.
Weather in Valencia
Check the next few days and available hourly forecasts before choosing your walk.
Ranges cover the displayed hours; today includes remaining hours only. Later days may have six-hour intervals. This is a forecast, not a live observation.

Outings and practical plans
Arriving and finding your bearings
Distinguish Joaquín Sorolla, used by many high-speed trains, from Estació del Nord closer to the old town. Metrovalencia connects the airport. Walk the centre; combine transport and walking for the beach and City of Arts rather than treating all areas as one short route.
Two routes to choose from
01
Markets and central squares
Estimated time: 3–4 hours including one interior
Start at Mercado Central while stalls are open, then cross to La Lonja for the city’s trading history. Continue via Plaza Redonda to the cathedral, Plaza de la Virgen and Torres de Serranos. Choose one tower climb or interior if time is tight. Finish beside Turia gardens for a break from monuments.
Start near Palau de la Música, follow Turia gardens towards Gulliver and continue to the City of Arts and Sciences. Walk between the buildings before choosing an interior. Oceanogràfic needs much of a separate day for an unhurried visit; the science museum and Hemisfèric have their own tickets and timings.
Nearby outings
L’Albufera y El Palmar
Swap monuments for rice fields, lagoon and food. Plan walking and lunch around El Palmar; a boat trip is optional and its departure needs confirmation, particularly at sunset.
Bus from Valencia towards the park; check the exact stop and last return, not only the outward trip.
A historic outing with town centre and hilltop castle. Separate the town walk from the climb: views reward the effort, but heat and slopes make rushed improvisation unwise.
Train from Valencia, then walk or use available local transport for the castle.
A short outing into the agricultural landscape associated with tiger nuts and horchata. Use public paths and respect cultivated plots; enjoying the huerta does not require crossing private fields.
Metrovalencia to Alboraya and walk; choose a distance suitable for the heat and your return.
Turia gardens allow alternating walking and play without a string of monuments. Gulliver can be the main stop if suitable for the children; bring appropriate shoes and check opening. Allow a relaxed day for Oceanogràfic and avoid adding the whole old town afterwards: distance and tiredness matter.
In the rain
For rain the Science Museum can fill several hours; choose exhibitions relevant to your group and check suggested ages. In the centre combine La Lonja and a museum with lunch nearby. Oceanogràfic is not entirely sheltered, even though it includes indoor aquariums.
What to try and where to pause
Plan rice dishes for lunch and ask which style, preparation time and minimum number of diners. Valencian paella, seafood rice and all i pebre are different dishes. Horchata and fartons make an afternoon snack rather than a full meal.
